Window Leaks Improper Insulation and Cold Temps can overwork your Central Heat & Air.
You don't have to sit shivering under two sweaters and a blanket just to stay warm. One of the biggest culprits for cold air infiltration are your windows and doors. If theyâre not airtight, inspect and replace the caulk around the exterior frames, repair any cracked or damaged glass, and make sure there are no gaps around entry doors and door frames. Your attic is another area that might be allowing warm air to escape your home. Make sure the insulation in your attic is sufficient and add more if necessary. Also check the insulation in exterior walls, floors, and crawl spaces. Even electrical outlets and light switches on exterior walls can benefit from added insulation. Besides reducing air leakage around your home, it's important to inspect and properly maintain your heating system. Heating (and cooling) your home uses more energy and costs more money than any other system in your home - typically making up about 48% of your electric bill. Change or clean your air filters once a month. It's beneficial to have a licensed HVAC contractor perform a yearly inspection and cleaning, which will go a long way to increase the efficiency of the unit. If you decide replace your windows, entry doors, add or change your insulation or HVAC systems, look for ENERGY STAR®-certified products. Windows, doors, and furnaces with the ENERGY STAR designation will perform much more efficiently. They will make your home more energy efficient, save you even more money on your utility bills, and keep you warm and cozy all winter long.
